Freeze, Rotate, Revoke: API Key Hygiene for Indian AI Teams

A teammate leaves. A laptop is lost. A key ends up in a screenshot, a chat thread or a public repo. For teams shipping AI features, that moment is not theoretical — it is when you find out whether your API keys were built to be controlled, or only to be shared.

OROO Blue is a secure AI gateway for Indian teams and developers. It gives you one API and one OROO key for OpenAI, Google and Anthropic models (oroo-chatgpt, oroo-gemini, oroo-claude). This post focuses on the hygiene that matters most when access must change fast: freeze, rotate, revoke, and IP allowlists.

Why AI keys need a clear off-boarding path

LLM keys are powerful. They can call paid models, spend wallet balance and reach whatever systems your prompts talk to. If a key lives in a shared secrets dump or on a personal machine with no expiry plan, a departure or a leak turns into a scramble.

Good hygiene answers three questions before anything goes wrong:

  • Can we stop a key instantly without rewriting the app?
  • Can we issue a replacement without downtime?
  • Can we keep stolen keys useless outside our own networks?

Freeze, rotate, revoke — three different tools

OROO Blue lets you freeze, rotate or revoke keys when you need to. Use each for a different situation.

Freeze

Freeze when you need a pause, not a permanent goodbye. Examples: an unusual spend spike you are investigating, a contractor whose access should stop for a week, or a staging key you want quiet during a weekend deploy. Frozen keys stop working until you decide otherwise.

Rotate

Rotate when the secret may be compromised but the app must keep running. Create a new key, put it in your secrets manager, roll it out to servers, then retire the old one. Rotation is the calm path after a leak suspicion — better than hoping nobody noticed.

Revoke

Revoke when a person leaves, a vendor engagement ends, or you are certain a key should never work again. Revocation is permanent for that secret. Pair it with an off-boarding checklist so every departure triggers a key review, not an afterthought.

Practical tip: give each app and each environment its own OROO key. If a development key is revoked, production keeps serving.

IP allowlists: make stolen keys fail outside your network

Even a careful team can lose a secret. IP allowlists on OROO Blue keys limit which networks may use that key. Bind production keys to your backend servers or VPN egress. A key pasted into a personal laptop or a random cloud shell then fails at the gateway instead of burning tokens.

Allowlists do not replace rotation after a confirmed leak — they reduce the blast radius while you respond.

Secrets you can actually manage

Key hygiene also starts at creation. On OROO Blue, key secrets are shown once and stored hashed. Copy the secret straight into your secrets manager the first time you see it. Never put it in a repo, a frontend bundle or a group chat.

Alongside freeze/rotate/revoke and allowlists, each key can carry its own model, token and rate limits, so one environment cannot quietly consume the whole budget. Retries stay safe too: idempotency keys prevent double charges when your client retries after a timeout.

Billing and privacy that fit Indian teams

Spend runs through a prepaid INR wallet called OROO Mint, topped up via Razorpay. You pay only for the tokens you use. As an optional reference, OROO GPT-4.1 mini is listed at Rs 52 input / Rs 210 output per 1M tokens. And because prompts often hold customer or business data, OROO does not store prompts or completions.

A short hygiene checklist

  • One OROO key per app and environment.
  • Secrets only in a secrets manager — never in git or chat.
  • IP allowlist on every production key.
  • Freeze on suspicion; rotate on probable leak; revoke on exit.
  • Review keys whenever someone leaves the team.

Take control of your AI keys

Key hygiene is not a side project. It is how Indian teams ship AI features without leaving open doors behind. With freeze, rotate, revoke and IP allowlists on a single gateway to OpenAI, Google and Anthropic models, OROO Blue is built for that reality. Get started at orooblue.com 🚀
